5 “Healthy” Choices That Come From Within

by Kacie Phillips on February 18, 2014

Aetna reached out to ask “What’s Your Healthy?” The answer to this question is neither simple, nor one-size-fits-all. In the past few months, I’ve been facing a multitude of health issues that have led me to a place of reflection on how much “healthy” can vary from person to person.

While I am not ready to share the details of my current health-related ailments, I do want to share a bit of insight into the personal reflection that has resulted. Here are five simple and “healthy” choices that come from within.

1. Learning to say no.

The start of the New Year is the first time in quite awhile that I’ve learned the power of “no.”  I have accepted that I cannot do everything. Part of being healthy is maintaining a balance of doing, doing, doing and simply being.

2. Taking time to relax.

“Relaxation” is another new concept that has allowed me to remain healthy amongst day-to-day struggles. Stress plays such a critical role in how we feel, interact with others, and live our lives. Taking time, whether through a hot bath or a lazy Saturday in bed, I’ve come to allow myself to occasionally do nothing. And nothing can be a beautiful thing.

3. Getting a good night’s rest.

I am guilty. Guilty of not getting enough sleep and relying on caffeine to wake me up, perk me up, and breed productivity. As of recently, I have to significantly (nearly entirely) restrict my caffeine intake. With this in mind, sleep has become my best friend. I make a conscious effort to tune out of life and tune into sleep at a decent hour. Our bodies need rest to recover from day-to-day activities; it is only fair we give ourselves a good night’s rest to wake up rejuvenated and ready to tackle a new day.

4. Letting others lend a helping hand.

Being independent is a great trait to have, but sometimes we must allow others to lend a helping hand. I no longer bottle up my emotions. When I am in need of emotional support, I always know my mom is a phone call away and my boyfriend will provide endless hugs to comfort me. I allow my loved ones and friends to be there for me, because if the roles were reversed, I would want to do everything to make their life happier, easier, and better off as well.

On a similar note, if I am struggling with a project with work or school, I have learned to reach out to the people around me. Instead of stressing about what I cannot accomplish alone, I focus on what I can achieve, even if it is with the assistance of others.

5. Staying positive.

This last point is short, simple, and to the point. Even with this being said, it is one of the hardest things for me to remember each and every day. Some days are just hard; we face hardship and setbacks in our goals, happiness, and overall well-being.

No matter what trials we face, we must remain positive. Positive for better days. Positive for brighter tomorrows.

Won’t you join myself and Aetna by sharing “What’s Your Healthy?”
